common terms of the faithfire universe

Absolution: The Empire’s theological framing of total synchronization with the FaithFire, presented as a “homecoming” or state of divine forgiveness achieved by removing the “infection” of doubt. Technically, it represents the successful alignment of human neural and cardiac frequencies to the system’s 42.7 Hz carrier wave. In tactical environments, the term is weaponized BY THE EMPIRE as a lethal euphemism for summary execution, typically delivered with the phrase “Here’s your absolution” immediately before a subject is KILLED.

Absolution Coin: Small metallic disks used as data-loggers by the Empire to tag the “obedient” in the field. These devices record the holder’s heart rate and “coherence index,” functioning as a receipt for a life deemed worth the fuel to keep warm.

Arithmetic of Disagreement: A tactical philosophy and electronic warfare method used by the IMR to break the “Unison” of the FaithFire lattice. By injecting jagged, non-periodic white noise or off-beat frequencies (typically 3.7 Hz) into a resonance field, the militia makes their neural signatures invisible to Imperial sensors.

Archon (Tier 6): one of four High-ranking officials who manage specific domains to ensure the system does not fracture. There are four Archons; one each is responsible for the domains of Doctrine, Continuity, Resonance, and Praxis. Their functional role is to “absorb failure” so that the apex of the faith remains untarnished. the archon reports directly to the high cleric.

archon of Continuity: Manages the long-term persistence and “archives” of the system. This domain ensures that the Empire’s history and structural integrity remain uninterrupted across different generations and corridors. This archon has considerable contact with civic members and citizens.

archon of Doctrine: Responsible for the belief structures and “arithmetical compliance” of the faith. This domain uses long-cycle belief models to ensure that coherence does not exceed the “tolerance ceiling,” which would turn belief into mere compulsion and destroy resonance. this archon has the most direct contact with the religious order of the empire.

archon of praxis: The operational “hands” of the Empire. This domain is responsible for the practical application of the faith’s will in the field, managing the “Choruses” that reach into the unregistered lands to bring them into alignment. this archon has the most direct contact with vicars and military leadership.

archon of resonance: Manages the biological and frequency-based harmonics of the FaithFire lattice. This includes general oversight of the Resonance Vault. this archon often has close connections with technical engineers and specialists who keep systems running.

AURORA: Standing for Adaptive Unified Relay of Resonant Arrays, this is a hardened mesh of phased arrays encircling New Austin that acts as a mass energy conductor and communication halo, capable of hoarding FaithFire energy to enforce the prophet’s will.

Babylon: The Imperial designation for “unregistered territories” or secular lands that refuse the Prophet’s order; it is framed in doctrine as the “fallen lands” that pollute the faithful air.

Baffler: A dielectric coupling array used by the IMR to inject “arithmetic noise” (typically a 3.7 Hz dissonance) into resonance fields, effectively making militia personnel invisible to Imperial tuning rods and sensors.

Brother (tier 2): these individuals often serve as field agents or observers for the empire. the brother reports directly to the father.

Calibration: A mass coherence event where FaithFire arrays synchronize a target population’s heart rate and neural patterns to a specific frequency; it is described by the Empire as “revelation” and by the IMR as “engineered miracles.”

Cleric (tier 1): The entry-level rank of the religious bureaucracy of the one world religion. the cleric reports directly to the brother.

Coherence Index (CI): A mathematical metric ranging from 0 to 1 that measures the degree of group neural entrainment and synchronization within a given zone.

Conviction: The first long gun built and carried by Linh Tran, crafted from a scavenged water pump barrel and a courier’s firing pin. It was designed to give a “final, loud word” to people being silenced by Imperial purification and was known for its ability to make evil hear its name.

Dielectric Coupling Array (Pylon): 40-meter mirrored alloy spires that act as ground-based capacitors for the orbital FaithFire lattice, grounding the “miracle” into bedrock to force a city’s consciousness into unison.

Equinox: A dormant system (later Project Equinox) designed by Ryan Creech to act as a “brake” or “detune” for FaithFire; it introduces phase-dithering to prevent neural lock-in and returns agency to individuals.

FaithFire: A totalizing infrastructure of phased microwave and terahertz energy that weaponizes belief by using human neurology as a biological substrate for its carrier wave.

Father (tier 3): Fathers often focus more on infrastructure needs and traditional ambassador roles for the empire. the father answers directly to the prefect.

Ghost-F: A kerosene-based fuel treated with additives that mask thermal signatures, allowing the IMR to “drift the margins” and move without being tracked by Imperial weather drones.

High Cleric (Tier 7): The apex of the hierarchy, short of the prophet themselves. This rank must remain “coherent” at all times, as the faith cannot be seen to fail at its highest level. the high cleric answers only to the prophet.

Hololith: A slang term for the Portable Communications Puck (PCP); technically, the “hololith” refers to the three-dimensional audio/video image generated by the device rather than the puck itself. See also Portable Communications Puck.

Juggernaut: A term used to describe the invulnerable state of Imperial Enforcers when their lines are locked in “Synchronized Cognition.” This status is stripped away once their coherence loop is shattered by dissonance, leaving them as merely mortal men.

Lector: A judicial priest of the Empire’s Fourth Chorus (Ministry of Renewal) who uses tuning rods to “judge the atmosphere,” tracking the “neural echoes” of doubt and dissent. lectors normally receive specialized tasks or directives from vicars, archons, or the high cleric.

Penitent: Heavy Imperial shock troops who view pain as worship; they are draped in silver-threaded chains that act as biological transducers to anchor the pylon grid through their own suffering.

Portable Communications Puck (PCP): A portable video/audio communication device used for secure transmissions and hololith projections. These pucks can be slaved to larger relays to facilitate quorum meetings or private family visits via distorted, grainy geometric projections.

Predictive Pulse Array (PPA): A stabilization tool that maps human heart rate variability and induces “compliance” across population clusters by reinforcing existing rhythms of coherence.

Prefect (tier 4): the mid-tier in the administrative ladder of the imperial religious doctrine, prefects oversee general operations in a specific zone. the prefect answers directly to the vicar.

project Iron Gospel: The codename for the Empire’s fusion of faith and machinery. It represents a metaphor for the unbreakable intersection of technology and liturgy, framed as a blueprint to “purify” the world through Fire.

PROPHET: The absolute spiritual and political authority of the One World Religion and the New World Empire.

Providence: Linh Tran’s final rifle, built from a Colthrant marksman’s model with a hand-lathed titanium barrel. Named as both an insult and a vow, it was designed as a “machine without mercy” to isolate faith from function and to teach the patience required for justice.

Reciprocity: The second rifle built by Linh Tran, which she left as a monument in the ruins of New Austin. The name reflects her philosophy that every bullet is an echo of a prior action, serving as a tool for “moral accounting” against those who treat human lives as variables.

Resonance Vault: A subterranean “cathedral foundation” in New Austin where the Fifth Chorus suspends “dissonant” citizens in pressurized gel to act as biological oscillators for the FaithFire grid.

SEER, THE: The supreme interpreter of the Prophet’s visions. The seer works with the prophet, and while technically below the prophet in hierarchal terms, he is often viewed as an equal in the system. the seer’s vision interpretations are considered absolute.

Seraph: In its early form, a hybrid prototype with human flesh wired into emitters; later iterations consist of “pure faith” volunteers in FaithFire-powered armor that amplifies their strength and resilience.

Vicar (tier 5): The empire’s regional directors, vicars oversee large areas of territory and act as the immediate liaison between their subjects and the archons. the vicar answers directly to the archon to which they are assigned.

Witness: A human manual trigger or observer—such as the “Crusader” or a member of the “Witness Corps” – persons dedicated to the task of preventing a system like faithfire or Equinox from becoming an automated tyranny.

Witness State: A maintenance protocol forced upon a FaithFire pylon or node that locks it into observation-only mode. In this state, the machine continues to gather data but its correction routines are disabled, preventing it from inducing compliance or relocation through frequency.
